Onno Wieringa was born in Conrad Montana and graduated from Montana State University with a B.S. in Commerce in 1972. During college Onno was a part-time ski patroller at Bridger Bowl and worked with Duane Bowles, Jim Kanzler, Terry Onslow, Peter Lev and took snow science classes from Dr. John Montagne.
In 1972 Onno went to Alta Utah and worked as a ski patroller until 1979 when he took over the Avalanche Program for the ski area. In 1988 Onno became General Manager and continued in that role until his retirement in 2017. Through those years Onno stayed active in daily avalanche hazard forecasting and control, RAC’s planning and was an artillery gunner every year from 1970-2017.
