Short Term Risk Reduction

Risk Reduction for projects brief in time or scope, but where some level of avalanche risk exists.

Short Term Risk Reduction is typically done when the project is brief in time or scope, but some level of avalanche risk exists. This might involve using locally available assets to develop an avalanche forecast program with hazard level forecasting and risk reduction based on hazard level (up to and including closures of the work site). An avalanche safety plan is developed for most projects, which is at least partially based on an avalanche atlas.

Examples:

  • Forecasting for one to two-week work projects for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company on sections of oil pipeline in avalanche terrain, Alaska
  • Avalanche Risk Analysis for a seasonal USFS road in Wyoming that needed to open for winter traffic (due to bridge damage on the primary access route). This risk analysis identified avalanche paths from the highest to lowest frequency and magnitude. Forecasting and mitigation alternatives were presented to the stakeholders and risk owners.
